The distance measurement of ultrasound sensors is based on high-frequent sound waves. This technology is ideal for environments with big obstacles with plain surface. Compared to infrared sensors, ultrasound sensors are not error prone to measuring distances to transparent obstacles or in bad sight- and light conditions. The are a cost efficient alternative to implement a simple obstacle detection and collision avoidance. Additionally, the processing of the sensor data is quite simple and does not need a high end processing unit.
